Carpe Diem Indianapolis announces campus consolidation at Northwest location

INDIANAPOLIS—Carpe Diem, a nationally recognized charter school operator, will consolidate its three Indianapolis locations at the school’s current Northwest location at 5435 West Pike Plaza Road.

The consolidation, which will take effect in the 2017-2018 school year, will allow the school to dedicate its full attention and resources to providing students with an outstanding educational experience and further developing community partnerships. The Carpe Diem Board of Directors tonight approved the action and also voted to voluntarily discontinue the school’s charter to operate its Shadeland campus.

“We look forward to welcoming our Meridian and Shadeland students at the new Carpe Diem Indianapolis campus, and we hope families who are still looking at schooling options for the 2017-2018 school year will consider our unique blended learning curriculum for their students,” said Carpe Diem founder Rick Ogston.

Ogston said the move will financially stabilize Carpe Diem’s Indianapolis presence, where ambitious expansion plans outpaced student enrollment. He also noted that charter schools in Indiana are limited by a funding model that favors traditional public schools.

A recent study by the University of Arkansas found that the average disparity in per-pupil funding between traditional public schools and their public charter school counterparts in metropolitan areas is $5,721, a gap of 29 percent. The study found that the gap in Indianapolis has grown by 1,148 percent since 2003.
